Composition - Based on personal taste
Composition as a term many would have come across. I have always thought of composition as the thought process that brings together and exhibit a certain relation between the elements. The elements when listed could include color, subject, habitat & patterns to name a few. This is true whether it is painting, music or photography. In the field of photography ( birds, mammals, macro to name a few ) and based on personal taste the elements involved could vary. One of the important milestones in a photographic journey is identifying what are the compositional elements that suit our taste and how we would like these elements to come together to form the final image. As a matter of fact an image which appeals to one person might not appeal to another and there are no clear cut answers about why it suits a person's taste. Initially when I started I used to make images of anything that feels right. Never made any effort to see why something appealed to me. After doing photography now for about an year now I can see that some elements do appeal to me more than others. This is again from the bird photography point of view. Have not done landscape, macro or mammals sufficient enough to have a view point currently. From the bird photography context things which appeal to me are Habitat, Eye, Negative space , Color and Light.
1. Habitat - When the bird is shown in its habitat it gives a idea about the relative size of the bird. A serpent eagle which is about 90 cm in height with a zoom of 300mm and a plain flowerpecker which is about 8 cm with a zoom of 800 would appear the same height with out any habitat around the bird.
2. Eye - Moment the eye is in focus with catch light every thing else in the image mostly falls into place. In an image usually the eye is the anchor point around which rest of the image is rendered. This is specifically true for bird photography.
3. Negative space - To me the negative space or the empty space around the subject gives a depth for the image.
4. Color & Light - Though they are seperate elements they come together and impact the mood of image.
Look at the following image

This is the habitat of Red throated flycatcher. The image was made during an evening safari at Pench. From the jeep I made around 50 images of which couple of them suited my taste and included the elements which I had mentioned above. In future posts will elaborate more on elements with examples.
